Birthday Extravaganza, Part 1: Retro Video Arcade

Malcolm decided that this year, instead of a party with his friends, he wanted to do a few things as a family.  His list was:  go to the retro video arcade, afternoon tea at a fancy hotel, The Melting Pot for cheese and chocolate, and seeing Motown, The Musical.  It sounds more like a list for a thirty year old instead of a seven year old, but we agreed to look into all his requests.  Unfortunately, Motown tickets were way more than we wanted to spend, so we agreed to the other three requests.

Today, was phase one, and we hit the retrocade downtown.

To start with, we went with some of the classics.

Malcolm plays Pac-Man while Dorothy tried Ms. Pac-Man.

She needed a little help with most of the games.

She steers, while Kevin fires.

Malcolm and Kevin both really liked this driving game.  Malcolm is really into driving games lately because there is one he sometimes gets to play at school.  Kevin liked it because he could purchase things to improve his car.

Last year, he wasn't quite tall enough to see the screen and be able to reach the foot pedals, but he was just fine this year.

Malcolm also really liked the Virtua Racing game where you sit to drive.  He could just barely reach the pedals, but he beat me in one out of three races we did.  If I hadn't crashed into him in the third race, he might have taken me then too.

Last year, Dorothy didn't care that her characters would die immediately, but this year she was very frustrated.  Old enough to understand, but not old enough to be able to play well at all.  This bowling game was the only one she was able to do mostly by herself.  We played a lot of games with my hands on top of hers (which is a really difficult way to play).

After playing for an hour, we headed down to Van's for some lunch and frozen custard.

A very serious game of Connect Four.

Dorothy's order of vanilla custard with gummy worms (yuck).

Malcolm and I shared a small turtle sundae, and even with two of us, we couldn't finish it.  Kevin helped with a few bites, but the last little bit didn't get eaten.

If he tells you that he doesn't like nuts and that you can have them all, don't believe him.  I think he ate as many, or more, than I did.

It was a fun start to his birthday.  On Tuesday, his actual birthday, we will open presents and go to The Melting Pot for dinner.
