We just got back from a family trip to Gatlinburg, TN where we had a fantastic time in the beautiful Smoky Mountains. We were gone for almost two weeks and took tons of pictures, so I'm going to break this up into several posts.
On our first day, we stopped in West Lafayette where we had a picnic lunch at Purdue, then let the kids play in the LAEB fountain.
They both spent a lot of time touching the water, then running away.
Malcolm crawled on his hands and knees all the way around the fountain, under the sprays of water.
We challenged them to try to touch the center pillar and they decided to try to bear walk their way in. Neither kid made it to the middle.

Once they were dry and dressed, we went as far as Indianapolis where we spent a couple of nights and visited Kevin's family. We hadn't been there since Dorothy was 6 months old, so we were way overdue.
Unfortunately, when we got to our hotel, we realized that the suitcase with both kids' clothes, shoes, underwear, and pajamas had been left at home. It had been crossed off of the list, but was never actually put into the car. Our hotel happened to be right behind a shopping mall, which was good, but it was probably the most expensive mall in Indiana. I spent our first couple of hours in town running around, trying to replace enough clothing to get the kids through our trip. I had some laundry detergent with us and the cabin had a washer and dryer, so I bought a few things and did some laundry to get them through. Whenever possible, I bought their new clothes a size to big, so I can save them for next summer because I had already over-bought for them for this year and the last thing they needed was more clothes.
On Sunday, we went with Kevin's cousin, and her family, to the Indianapolis Art Museum's 100 Acres park and did the Art-in-the-Park project they offer for kids.
There are several art installations in the park, and one of them was a bunch of white signs with various words written on them. Some were serious, but many were silly.

The art project that day was "Clay Play" and they were making porcupines. Here, they are watching the woman in charge and listening to her describe how to create their porcupines.

Dorothy really struggled making something three dimensional, so they gave her some stamps and other materials to make some flat beads.
I didn't get any pictures of the finished products, but you can sort of see Malcolm's in his hands.
After doing so much thinking and sculpting, it was time to burn off a little energy.
There are yellow "benches" throughout the park that are all different shapes.
Dorothy liked climbing them, then trying to slide down them.
Malcolm really enjoyed the bones sculpture and jumping from bone to bone.
The park also has some games that can be checked out. Kevin's cousin got the giant Jenga set and we played a couple of games in the shade.

It was a long day and both kids napped hard.
It was great to have such a leisurely travel day and to get to spend time with some family we don't see too often.
