The small bear by the mammoth's foot is Barnaby, a bear from Malcolm's school. Barnaby goes home with a different child each weekend and they are to take pictures and write about Barnaby's adventures in his journal. We already had a turn in the Fall, but everyone gets a second chance, and we are "lucky" to have him over Spring Break.
The museum has a few hands on exhibits, but not as many as the kids would have liked. They didn't hold still long enough for me to read much to them.
There was a special butterfly activity area where they got to make butterflies out of coffee filters, clothes pins, and pipe cleaners. Here they are, hard at work. There were two other small butterfly activities they also did involving rubber stamps and putting plastic models in the correct order for the life cycle of a butterfly.
Barnaby, Malcolm, and Dorothy riding in a canoe.
I think both kids liked these tree branch building blocks the best out of anything else. Dorothy spent a long time here. Malcolm moved around too much for me to get any pictures of him in focus.
She did lots and lots of stacking and re-stacking.
More stacking.
Concentrating.
We happened to be there as the fox snakes were having their habitat cleaned. Malcolm wasn't interested, but Dorothy did touch this one snake (barely).
It was a cute museum, and the right size for how long we had to spend there, but they are a bit young for just looking at exhibits and reading (or listening to me read) the information cards. I'm glad we went, and even though they were completely unimpressed with the dinosaur exhibit, I'm glad we can check "see dinosaurs" off of our list of things to do with the kids.
